Anna Marie “Betty” (Bunner) Barnes

Anna “Betty” (Bunner) Barnes, 89, passed away peacefully and entered into Heaven’s Gate to be with the Lord on June 27, 2014, at 11:20 p.m., at Eagle Pointe after an extended illness.

She was born on April 24, 1924, in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Robert and Minnie (Buck) Bunner.

After graduating from Parkersburg High School in 1944, Betty went to work at the American Viscose in south Parkersburg as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. While there, she met her future husband, Cecil Barnes. Betty and Cecil were married on Nov. 6, 1945, and were wed until his death in 2001. After her marriage, Betty stopped working at the Viscose and became a homemaker, raising her and Cecil’s children until she later became the breadwinner due to the illness of her husband by working at the FMC plant in south Parkersburg until its closing in 1972. She then worked several years at the Dils department store until she retired. A Protestant by faith, Betty enjoyed reading, watching old episodes of Bonanza on television, cooking and being with her family.

She is survived by her children, Robert “Bob” Barnes of Charleston, W.Va., Cecil Barnes Jr. (Gloria) of Parkersburg, Debbie Mincks (Larry) of Williamstown, Sheila Yopp (Randy) of Parkersburg and Terry Barnes (Crystal) of Parkersburg. Betty is also survived by five grandchildren, Jason (Briana) Mincks of Parkersburg, Andrea Mincks of Pitcairn, Pa., Eric (Brenda) Barnes of Parkersburg, Elizabeth (Mike) Thomas of Parkersburg, Emily Barnes of Parkersburg; and six great-grandchildren. Sheila was Betty’s caregiver for the last 25 years with Randy’s help for the last 14.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Bunner and Elenora Jeffrey; and her daughter-in-law, Deborah Barnes.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with Evangelist Dana Slingluff officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery North. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Amedysis Hospice Services, 417 Grand Park Drive, Suite 206, Vienna, WV 26105.
