James L. Webster

James L. Webster, 78, passed away March 11, 2014 at the Ravenswood Care Center in Ravenswood, W.Va.

Mr. Webster was born in Stillwater, Okla., on March 20, 1935 to the late Dr. James E. and Verna Webster.

He completed schools in Stillwater, was active in Scouts attaining his Eagle Scout. He attended Oklahoma State University where he obtained his Bachelors Degree and went to work for Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas. He was a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp in Fort McClellan, Ala. and reached the rank of Captain before resigning his commission in 1967. In 1958 he married Virginia Bachelor from Lake Jackson, Texas who is now deceased.

Mr. Webster returned to graduate school and completed his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering in May 1964 and worked for his own firm, Phalanx Corporation until joining the research organization in the plastics department of DuPont Company in Orange, Texas in 1966.

In 1969 he and Virginia moved to Wilmington, Del. and then moved to Parkersburg in August of 1973 and he worked as an area superintendent in the manufacturing division for eight years and then was made a Research Associate in 1981. He retired from DuPont in December of 1997.

On August 9, 1997 Mr. Webster married Marsha Akers Rutherford at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he had been a member and served in many positions.

His hobbies were nature activities and collecting antiques, mainly antique and primitive tools.

Surviving are his wife of Vienna. His daughter, Laura Marshall (Hazen) of Alexandria, Va.. Twin sons, James Robert (Lauren) of Dothan, Ala. and James Frank (Stacy) of Austin, Texas. Step daughters, Kelly Norman and Tracy Easton; Eleven grandchildren and step grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend, Marlin Buckmaster (Barbara). One sister, Phyllis Mayberry of Stillwater, Okla. and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services wil be Sunday at 2:30 at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with The Reverend W. Brent Sturm officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
