Elma E. Boyd
Elma Elizabeth Boyd, 92, of Parkersburg, passed away March 17, 2014, at Worthington Care and Rehabilitation.
She was born in Hockingport, Ohio, on June 29, 1921, a daughter of the late Clyde Elwood and Wilma B. Taylor Emrick.
Elma was a 1939 graduate of Parkersburg High School and a 1944 graduate of Glenville State College. She had taught school in West Virginia for 12 1/2 years, having taught in Kanawha County Schools, Wood County Schools and at Williamstown Elementary School. In Ohio, she taught at Salem Liberty, Warren High School, Belpre High School and retired in 1988 from Morgan County High School, where she had taught for 18 years. She served as a substitute teacher for several years. She did not enjoy retirement and took a fulltime teaching position with the Word of Faith Christian Academy in Belpre, teaching for two years. She again served as a substitute teacher until 2004. Her 60-year teaching career touched many students and families.
Elma was a member of the Belpre VFW Auxiliary, Williamstown Eastern Star Chapter 58, where she has served as Worthy Matron, Member of the Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, Women of the Moose in Marietta and has sang with the Gospel Music Reunion Choir for several years. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Williamstown.
Surviving Elma are her children, Janet Boyd Rinehart (Michael) and James Steven Boyd; grandchildren, Steven Richard Rinehart (April), Benjamin Scott Rinehart (Jamie), Charles Erick Boyd, Samuel Clifford Boyd II and Jazmine Elizabeth Boyd; great-grandchildren, Shiloh Clark Rinehart, Kyra Marie Rinehart, Mara Elizabeth Rinehart, Jaina Marie Rinehart, David Michael Rinehart, Steven Ray Rinehart, Julian Andrew Rinehart, Max Peyton Boyd and Lyric Boyd; great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Austin Dosch and Brancon Michael Rinehart; and special friend, Jeannie Offangber (Edward) and family.
In addition to her parents, Elma was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Clifford Boyd; and lifelong friend, Carol Shuman.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Steve Gedon officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
