John R. Seafler

John R. Seafler, 81, of Parkersburg, passed away Sept. 1, 2013, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.

He was born Feb. 14, 1932 in Charleston, W.Va., a son of the late Rome and Ethel Milbee Seafler.

He was a graduate of Dunbar High School in 1950. In 1953, he married Betty Mace George. He completed the apprenticeship training in 1957 and became a member of Plumbers and Steam-fitters Local 565. He worked as a journeyman plumber, as a welding inspector at DuPont, and was an instructor for apprenticeship programs. He served 29 years as president of Parkersburg Area Labor Council, and was business manager of the Parkersburg-Marietta Building and Construction Trade Council from which he retired in 1993. John was involved in many labor and civic organizations during his working career. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #169, Nemesis Shrine and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a Protestant by faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2000. Also preceding him were Becky Seafler, Roxanne Morgan and Lyndal Filheart. He is survived by two sons, Phillip George of Parkersburg and Mark (Kimberly) George of Williamstown; and four grandchildren, Sean (Joanna) George of Belpre, Bradley (Margaret) George of Ripley, Timothy George of Morgantown, and Shery George Grogan of Fredericksburg, Va. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Madison, Morgan, Avery, Alec and Grant; along with several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Leavitt Funeral Home of Parkersburg on Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jay Burkhart officiating. Visitation will be Thursday at Leavitt Funeral Home of Parkersburg from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
