Thomas Raymond Ellenberger

Thomas Raymond Ellenberger, 84, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Aug. 4. 2013.

He was born Jan. 29, 1929 in Connellsville, Pa., the son of the late John Ray and Mary Lamb Jones Ellenberger.

He graduated from Connellsville High School with the class of 1946 and soon afterward found work with West Penn Power. He worked as a boiler attendant in the company’s then-new Milesburg station until enlisting for service in the U.S. Army. After completing OCS training at Fort Riley, Kansas, he served in Korea as an ordnance officer with the 101st Airborne Division, returning to his job as a control operator with West Penn following his honorable discharge in 1954.

In November 1956, he married Patricia Lucille Barnes of Bellefonte, Pa., who for 56 years was the joy and center of his life, even unto its very end. Together they had two children, John Thomas of New Bern, N.C., and Holly Sue of Houston, Texas, who survive with their mother.

As new power stations were built, the family moved to new locations, finally settling in Parkersburg in 1977 with the construction of Pleasants Power Station, where Tom eventually became Superintendent of Operations before retiring in 1993 after 40 years of service to the utility. His long and healthy retirement afforded him and Pat the opportunity to travel together to many destinations, always to return to the home they loved in North Hills. Together, they were deeply involved in the life and ministry of First Presbyterian Church, Parkersburg, serving in many capacities over the decades of their membership there. In the 90s, Karen Johnson-Ellenberger was added to their family, and soon Lydia Claire and Edith Hope Ellenberger appeared to fulfill Tom’s wish for grandchildren. He loved them dearly, as they loved their “Pa-pa.” He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Michael Seely officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. The family will also greet friends at the church on Thursday from 10-11 a.m.

Tom was a man whose path through this life was lighted by his sense of right. Ever just and honorable, he was a devoted husband, a patient parent, a worthy competitor, a singer of silly songs, a joyful friend and a faithful servant of his God, to whom this day and ever after will we offer our thanks for Tom’s love, life and example.
