William F. ‘Bill’ Engle
William F. “Bill” Engle, 81, of Belmont, W.Va., died July 27, 2013, at his residence.
He was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va., on Oct. 25, 1931. He was the son of the late Harold P. and Estella A. Piatt Engle.
He graduated from St. Marys High School in 1949, attended Marietta College on an Honor Scholarship and Mountain State Business College. He received the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe. He was a Vice-President of Eureka Water Corporation. He enlisted for three years in the U.S. Army on May 12, 1952, and graduated from the U.S. Army Southeastern Signal School in Camp Gordon, Ga., as a high speed radio intercept operator. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in Korea in the Army Security Agency; HQS of the 501st Communications Reconnaissance Group and the 326 Commissioned Recon Company from March 1, 1953, through August 1954. He was honorably separated May 12, 1955, as a sergeant at Ft. Devens, Mass. He was in the ready reserves for two years and three years in the inactive reserves. Bill was honorably discharged May 12, 1960.
He worked with his father and uncle “Bill” Engle in Engle’s Store and worked with his father-in-law, Raymond E. “Billo” DeLong, in Timber and Oil Production. He also worked for American Cyanamid. He retired from Union Carbide-Sistersville after 38 years of service as Production Distribution Coordinator and Production Planner. He was a 50-year plus member of St. Marys Masonic Lodge 41 A. F. & A. M., St. Marys VFW Post 222, American Legion Post 79, a Life Member of the Army Security Agency, Korea, Honesdale, Pa., and a member of the NRA. He was a member of Waverly Church of Christ, having served as Elder Deacon, Treasurer, Teacher and Trustee. He loved his cats, Boo, Heide, Cali, Katie and Hardrock.
He is survived by his wife of 50-plus years, Cora Edith DeLong Engle; one son, William E. Engle; one daughter, Edith I. Engle of Gainesville, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Irene DeLong of Belmont, W.Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, John William Engle.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Waverly Church of Christ, with Bob Long officiating. Interment will be in Willow Island Cemetery, Willow Island, W.Va., with military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., and from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
