W.E. ‘Bill’ Ruehl

W.E. ‘Bill’ Ruehl, 81, of Parkersburg, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at The Arbors of Marietta.

He was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Cumberland, Md., to the late William and Pearl (Hansrote) Ruehl. Bill graduated from the University of Maryland in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in business. While there, he was a member of the 1953 national championship football team. Following graduation, Bill entered the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant, and was assigned to the Far-East Material Command in Western Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. Bill served 18 months as a logistics specialist and separated upon return to the United States in 1955. After his return, Bill worked in the baking industry in Baltimore, Md., and came to Parkersburg in 1960 employed by Storck Baking Co. In 1965, Bill partnered in the development of a chain of Foodland grocery stores in the Parkersburg area. After selling the Foodland stores, in 1975, Bill owned and operated a business consulting enterprise in the Parkersburg area serving numerous small business owners in the region. Bill sold this business in 2003 and fully retired in the Parkersburg area. Throughout his life in Parkersburg, Bill actively contributed to the community through numerous appointments to city and county boards, Chamber of Commerce, past President of Parkersburg Rotary, and was actively involved in local politics.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn ‘Kit’ Ruehl; one daughter, Sherry Dugan of Parkersburg; two sons, Steven A. Ruehl (Mary) of Fairfax Station, Va., and Stewart A. Ruehl (Mary Beth) of Hickory, N.C.; one sister, Betty Friend (Dick) of Oakland, Md.; three grandchildren, Steven, Scott and Sarah Ruehl; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved German Shepherd, Brav. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Wolfe; and his step-mother, Evelyn Blosser Ruehl.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice or the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Ian Reed officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service 2-3 p.m. Sunday.
