Lawrence G. Stoops, 91, of Parkersburg, departed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in Parkersburg, following an extended illness.
Lawrence was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Wood County, a son of the late George and Della (Holmes) Stoops. He was retired after 47 years of service to the former Ames True Temper plant of Parkersburg where he served as a laborer. He was baptized and a member of the Camden Avenue Church of Christ for many years. He also worked in the Civilian Conservation Camps during the great depression and helped build Hawks Nest State Park and the stadium at PHS. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, cars, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Stoops, who lived with and took care of Lawrence; sons, Jimmy Stoops and Larry Stoops, both of Washington, W.Va.; grandchildren, Alex White, Sabrina White, Thomas Stoops, and Shane Stoops; great grandchildren, Madison White, Mackenzie White, Zachary Evans, Kaci Evans, Christopher Stoops, and Kaley Stoops. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maxine (Bailey) Stoops on June 28, 1992; daughter in law, Carolyn Stoops; sister, Isabelle Solvel; brothers, Everett, Carl, Clayton, Cecil, and Clarence Stoops, and granddaughter, Sherry Evans.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial will follow in the Evergreen South Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today, and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
