Athens Sheriff

ATHENS, Ohio — The Athens County Sheriff’s Office released the following reports Feb. 12:

* On Feb. 11, the Criminal Interdiction Unit made contact with a suspicious vehicle in the Nelsonville area. While speaking with the occupants a female advised she was in possession of marijuana. It was collected and logged for destruction.

* On Feb. 11, the Criminal Interdiction Unit stopped a vehicle and found the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. During the stop, deputies observed the odor of marijuana. It was recovered from one of the passengers and was logged for destruction.

* On Feb. 11, the Criminal Interdiction Unit made contact with a male in the Nelsonville area. A small amount of marijuana was seized for destruction.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sycamore Street for a report of possible domestic violence/menacing. The complainant stated that he and his son were arguing, and he was threatened to be beaten by a 2 by 4. He said that he wanted to report it due to a long history of being threatened and potentially seeking further injunction for protection. Deputies were not able to establish anything further due to lack of physical evidence. Deputies have not been able to locate the other involved party for a statement at this time. This case was closed pending contact with the possible suspect in this case.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to State Route 13 in Glouster, for a report of a suspicious person. Deputies made contact with the complainant who advised a white male, with a red scruffy beard, walked near the homeowner’s garage. When the male came back around from the garage, a bicycle was seen on the property. Deputies observed the bicycle and documented this report.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office spoke with a complainant by phone in regard to threats and harassment report on Jeffers Road. The complainant wished to report an ex-fiance had made threats to cause damage to a home of which he still resides at. The complainant advised she was not currently at home, and advised she simply wanted to log this information. Deputies advised the complainant to contact 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. No further action.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office was called to Murphy Road for a report of a property dispute there. A female went to the residence to get property from the home for her hospitalized mother and other residents of the property were refusing to allow her entry to the residence. The clothing was retrieved from the home. While on scene a male, Robert Cottrill, was arrested on warrants out of Meigs County and transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail without further issue.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office was called to Buchtel for a report of a male at his parents’ residence. There had recently been a protection order issued against the male, but he had not been served yet. Deputies observed his vehicle leaving the area while in route to the residence and turned to follow the vehicle. The vehicle sped up significantly and began driving erratically but was stopped at the intersection of SR 691 and Canal Street in Nelsonville. The protection order was served. No further action needed at this time.

* On Feb. 9, it was reported to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office that a male with a protection order had been driving loudly on the roadway near the home of the protected party. Shortly after that, he was seen leaving the area and gunshots were heard in the vicinity. No injuries were reported. This matter remains under investigation.

* On Feb. 9, a call was received by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office reporting the sound of glass breaking at an apartment on N Plains Road. A window was observed to have been broken when deputies arrived. The door to the residence was unsecured and through the window the apartment was visibly disheveled. The residence was cleared to ensure no one was inside injured. The apartment was empty of any persons and no neighbors had contact information for the resident. This matter remains under investigation.

* On Feb. 9, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office was called to Carr Road, for an active dispute. The caller stated that she and her boyfriend were assaulted by the neighbors. The male victim was transported to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital for his injuries from the assault. The suspects left the area prior to deputy’s arrival. This case is still under further investigation.

* On Feb. 9, a resident of Cincinnati Ridge Road came to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office to report a theft offense. A report was taken, and an investigation is pending.

* On Feb. 10, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to The Plains for an intoxicated male. On scene, the complainant advised that their friend was highly intoxicated and was out of control. Witnesses stated the subject was behaving violently and screaming at them. Timothy Mantel, 21, was then placed into custody for disorderly conduct by intoxication and transported to SEORJ without incident.

* On Feb. 10, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a stolen vehicle report from a Rainbow Lake Road resident. The caller stated he did unintentionally leave the keys in the vehicle and the doors unlocked. The vehicle is a dark purple 2007 Torrent. This case is still under investigation.

* On Feb. 10, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a laptop being stolen out of a vehicle on Rainbow Lake Road. The caller stated he had left his vehicle unlocked and forgot to take the laptop in the house. This case is still under investigation.

* On Feb. 10, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report of theft which had occurred on Mound Street. Deputies were advised that a complainant had given her vehicle to a male to perform maintenance on it. The complainant advised she had paid $400 for the work, that was not completed. This matter remains under investigation.

* On Feb. 10, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office observed a car parked in the roadway on Fossil Rock Road. The car came back with an invalid registration and the neighbors near where the car was parked stated that it had been there for several days. Due to the car being a roadway hazard, it was towed for safety.

* On Feb. 11, a resident of The Plains reported a burglary and theft. The caller stated he had $165 in cash stolen from a locked safe inside his locked residence. The caller said there were no signs of forced entry into either the home or the safe, so at this time he is only requesting the incident to be documented in a report.

* On Feb. 11, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office received a report of criminal damage/mischief on Rainbow Lake Road. Complainants had the side walls to their pool punctured with a sharp tool by unknown persons. Anyone with information on this case are asked to call the Athens County Sheriff’s Office at 740-593-6633.

* On Feb. 11, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office called to Jeffers Road for a domestic dispute. Deputies were advised by Athens County 9-1-1 of a physical altercation between parties, while a 9-1-1 line was open. Deputies arrived on scene and separated parties. Visible injuries were observed on the complainant’s neck and left hand. Deputies determined probable cause for domestic violence and arrested Michael T. Welch, 37, of Athens, who was transported to SEORJ without incident.

* On Feb. 11, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle on State Route 550 in Athens. One the occupants was found to have two active warrants, one out of Washington County and one out of Morgan County. The male, Aaron C. Goins, 46, of Amesville, was arrested and transported to the county line and turned over to Washington County Sheriff’s Office. No further action needed at this time.

ATHENS, Ohio — On Feb. 13 the following reports were released by Athens County Sheriff’s Department:

Feb. 12

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of a puppy on Vore Ridge. After speaking with the dog warden and the prosecutor’s office, it was determined to be a civil matter because both parties had dog tags for the puppy and claiming ownership. Both parties were advised to handle the issue through civil court.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a verbal dispute between a resident of Stewart and a local sanitation company on Feb. 9. The incident was resolved by the agency after speaking with both parties.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office assisted EMS on an unresponsive male located in a vehicle in The Plains. Prior to deputies arrival, EMS made contact with the male who was now responsive. The male said he was just tired. Treatment was refused by the male and he made contact with a friend to drive him home.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office oversaw a court ordered property retrieval on Jeffers Road. The retrieval was completed without incident.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a breaking and entering from two weeks ago. The complainant said he was away for 14 days and his case worker was supposed to take care of his dog while he was away. While he was away, he said, someone had broken down his door and had gone through the house. He said nothing was taken but items were moved. He said he had already cleaned up the scene, and only wished for a report to be taken.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Waterworks Hill for a report of a juvenile attempting to hurt themselves. Upon arrival, it was determined that the juvenile would be transported to O’Bleness for treatment.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Jacksonville for a dispute report. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with one of the involved parties who said the other half left and no injuries occurred.
