ATHENS, Ohio — On May 16 the Athens County Sheriff’s Office released the following reports:

May 15

* Deputies were dispatched to a residence in Rome Township in reference to a disturbance call. In making contact with the complainant, it was determined the neighbor across the street was likely intoxicated or high, and was ranting and rambling about various things. While deputies were on scene the area was quiet.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ohio 13 in Millfield for a report of a possible domestic violence situation called in by a home health aide. Deputies investigated and determined the elements of domestic violence were not met. It was determined the two individuals involved had been in a dispute, but was in the interest of caregiving and the elements of the case were not of malicious intent. This case was referred to Adult Protective Services for review.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Valero in The Plains for a report of counterfeit money was being used. The station attendant stated a 2006 Ford F-150 with two occupants attempted to purchase gasoline with a fake $100 bill. When confronted, the subject then paid with a legitimate $20 and pumped his gasoline. The vehicle license plate did not match the type of vehicle observed in the parking lot. No positive identification was made by the attendant. This case was considered closed pending review of surveillance and possible identification of suspect.

* Deputies were called to Bessemer Road in Nelsonville for a report of a dispute there. Upon arrival, it was reported Matthew Copus had knowingly attempted to cause harm to his wife with children present. Copus was arrested and transported to South East Ohio Regional Jail. While deputies were completing the investigation, Stanley Davis came to the residence and created such a disturbance as to prevent the officers from conducting the investigation and after several warnings, Davis was arrested for obstructing official business and transported to jail as well.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to First Street in Buchtel for a scam report. The victim said she attempted to get a job online which required her to move money to a specific account in order to get paid. She stated an artist from the southern California area asked her to deposit a check into her bank account, withdraw the money and then send it to a third party. It was determined through the bank the check cashed did not have sufficient funds after it was cleared. The victim stated she believed it was part of her duties as this person’s assistant to transfer money to specific accounts. There were multiple points of deception as there are addresses from San Diego, Calif., Pennsylvania, and San Antonio, Texas. She also stated she is not able to reach her contact by phone regarding the issue. The victim was also referred to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the FBI for reporting this scam.

* Deputies were called to Monroe Street in Chauncey for an attempted breaking and entering. Some damage was located on the door indicating someone had tried to pry it open. Patrol will be increased.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Heatherstone Drive in Athens for a burglary report. The victim said they returned home to find a brick had been thrown through a window and items stolen. Deputies were not able to find any evidence at the scene or witnesses in the area to this crime. This case was closed pending further investigative information.

* The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Evergreen Estates in The Plains for a private property crash report. The complainant said the driver of the other vehicle involved came to her apartment saying she had just hit her vehicle. The complainant was not able to get any further information as the other involved party left the area. This case was under further investigation.

ATHENS, Ohio — On May 17 the Athens County Sheriff’s Office released the following reports:

May 16

* Deputies responded to Valero in The Plains on a report of two males who possibly overdosed in a vehicle. Upon arriving on scene, deputies were able to awaken the subjects and it was found they had simply fallen asleep. The individuals were not found to be intoxicated or on under the influence of any substance. EMS personnel checked them for safety reasons. One of the males identified as Sean Nichols was found to have a warrant for his arrest. Nichols was placed under arrest and transported to South East Ohio Regional Jail. A ride was called for the other male.

* Officers of the Adult Parole Agency were assisted by the ACSO in apprehending Jeremiah Stufflebeam on a parole violation and Hocking County warrants. Stufflebeam was located hiding in a residence in Athens and was then arrested and transported to SEORJ without incident.

* Deputies took a theft report from Converse Street in Chauncey. The complainant advised that a wallet was stolen between Saturday and Tuesday. Included were several personal cards and money cards.

* Deputies were dispatched to a Ohio 78 residence on a report of a dispute over a property line and property damaged. After deputies spoke to both subjects the matter was resolved for the time being until the property can be surveyed.

* Deputies responded to Converse Street in Chauncey for a breaking and entering report. There are no suspects; however, this case remains active.

* Deputies responded to The Valero in The Plains for a theft of lottery tickets. Deputies gathered information and video footage of the theft. Photographs can be found on the Athens County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. * Deputies were dispatched to West Bailey Road in Nelsonville for a theft report. Deputies arrived on scene and spoke with a complainant who stated a neighbor took $20 from her purse. When the neighbor refused to give the money back, the complainant took a bicycle from the neighbor. The neighbor also took a bicycle from the complainant’s residence in an attempt to get their bike back. Deputies mediated the dispute, and stood by as parties returned the bikes to each other. Deputies could not determine a theft of $20 had been committed, and cleared the scene.

* Deputies were dispatched to an active dispute on East First Street in The Plains. Deputies arrived on scene and parties had separated. It was determined that a neighbor was trespassing on another person’s property without permission. Deputies then served a trespass complaint on the neighbor for future calls.

* Deputies were dispatched to North Plains Road for a breaking and entering complaint. Deputies observed damages and photographed evidence. Evidence was collected to be tested, with charges expected.

* Deputies were dispatched to Mill Street in Chauncey for a burglary report. Deputies were advised the homeowner arrived, and observed a tall male, wearing blue jeans, a sweatshirt and a mask. The male ran off on foot toward The Marathon carrying a crow bar. Deputies observed and photographed damages to the front door, in an apparent forced entry. Nothing has been reported as stolen and there are no known suspects.
