Circuit Court

PARKERSBURG — The following case was heard in Wood County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

In Judge Robert Waters’ Court:

* Kenneth Leroy McCoy, 34, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, and McCoy’s co-defendant, Jessica Nicole Roberts, 25, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, will begin trial on April 22, 2019. They were indicted on two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree robbery, burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

Roberts was also charged with fraudulent use of an access device. The two allegedly broke into the home of Penni Curtiss on Dec. 11, 2017, and according to the police report, waited for the victim to return home. Upon the victim entering her residence, the victim was struck in the head multiple times leaving what appeared to be blunt force trauma to her head and her throat severely cut, the police report said.

Police said the investigation revealed Curtiss’ death was caused by either the trauma to her head, the cut or cuts to her throat, or both. The injuries were allegedly caused by both defendants, which is supported by statements provided by both defendants and evidence obtained throughout the investigation, Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin previously said.

After the death of the victim, the defendants allegedly removed Curtiss’ personal belongings from her residence, police said. Police said Roberts and McCoy took a van from the residence belonging to Curtiss and were arrested in Illinois.

On Monday in circuit court:

* Waters accepted guilty pleas from two defendants indicted together on drug charges.

Meghan Dorset, 30, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail, pleaded guilty to an information charging her with conspiracy to commit possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Two other possession with intent charges and four counts of conspiracy were dismissed against him as part of the plea agreement.

Both defendants made motions for alternative sentencing. Waters is slated to sentence them on Jan. 18, Giffen at 9:15 a.m. and Dorset at 9:30 a.m..
