Williamstown focuses on safety

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williamstown City Council has been discussing ways to regulate and enforce rules for golf carts, ATVs and off-road vehicles that are being used increasingly on the streets.

Some council members have brought up banning these vehicles entirely from the city, but others don’t agree.

“We shouldn’t penalize the whole crowd for a few bad decision makers,” said Council member Jim Parker at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

Council member Jim Stage said enforcing the rules would be a burden on the local police and that using these vehicles should be banned.

Williamstown Mayor Jean Ford said there are ordinances that are not being enforced, such as age requirements for helmets (anyone under 16).

“We want something enforceable,” Ford said.

City Attorney Blaine Myers is working up an ordinance he hopes will encompass council’s concerns.

In other business:

• Council accepted a bid from Kelly Paving of $100,080 for paving the Silos, Painters Crossing and the Eighth Street end of Henderson Avenue, with the widening of West Fifth Street entered as an alternative.

• Council passed two items on second reading: appointing the Board of Zoning Appeals to act under the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) and imposing penalties for violations of the IPMC.

• Council passed on first reading adding the north section of Knottingham Avenue to the no parking ordinance.

• Trick or Treat will be on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 6-7:30 p.m.
