VIENNA — Demolition started Monday on the former Sears site at the Grand Central Mall.

Work started on the interior of the site, mall Manager Jody Hopkins said.

Sears closed earlier this year, part of a nationwide business plan by the retailer that also owns Kmart.

The plan by the Washington Prime Group Inc., owner of the mall, is to redevelop that section of the mall as an open-air sales area and transform the “traditional enclosed mall into a hybrid town center,” the company said earlier this year.

Four stores have recently opened at the mall, Hibbett Sports, Ulta Beauty, Five Below and H&M. Big Lots is moving into the former Toys R Us with the opening in the 46,000 square foot space expected this year.
