Beef Quality Assurance Training set for Thursday

RIPLEY — WVU Extension is offering a Beef Quality Assurance Training for area cattle producers on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at the Jackson County Regional Livestock Market on Cedar Lakes Road in Ripley.

The meeting is sponsored by WVU Extension, the W.Va. Beef Industry Council, Ingelheim Boehringer and Jackson County Livestock.

BQA is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that raises consumer confidence through offering proper management techniques and a commitment to quality within the beef industry, organizers said. BQA certification is increasingly being encouraged, and in some cases required, by market outlets for feeder calves and finishing cattle and this trend is expected to increase, they added.

“Beef Quality Assurance is a national, farmer driven program started to promote the production of a high quality, safe product for consumers,” said J.J. Barrett, WVU Extension agriculture agent. “BQA workshops offer updates to assist livestock producers on keeping current with best management practices based on research based information.”

BQA basics, cattle handling, marketing, herd health, meat quality, calf management and record keeping are some of the topics. The program is free and open to anyone. Pre-registration is encouraged.
