Man shot, killed after struggle with Roane deputy

WALTON, W.Va. — A Looneyville man was fatally shot Friday by a Roane County Sheriff’s deputy after a struggle in which the man attempted to grab the officer’s gun.

According to published reports, Timothy Rhodes, 28, of Looneyville, was killed. A call seeking comment from the sheriff’s department Monday was not returned.

Published reports say a Roane sheriff’s deputy responded around 5 p.m. to a report of a vehicle spinning its wheels and kicking rocks onto a house on Ambler Ridge Road near Walton. Rhodes and a female passenger were ordered out of the car. The woman complied, but Rhodes initially did not, reports say.

A struggle ensued when the deputy attempted to handcuff Rhodes, who reportedly reached for his gun.

The West Virginia State Police assisted in processing the scene, but a spokesman directed media inquiries Monday to the sheriff’s department.

The Hur Herald reported the deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on leave.
