Officials present draft 2019-20 Wood County Schools calendar

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Board of Education next month is expected to approve a calendar for the 2019-20 school year.

The proposed calendar was presented to the board Tuesday and is similar to this year’s calendar. Director of Elementary Schools Keith Palmer facilitates the district’s calendar committee and presented the proposed schedule to the board.

Teachers will begin Aug. 12, a Monday, with students starting classes Aug. 15, a Thursday. Open House for all schools will be held the evening of Aug. 13, a Tuesday.

The calendar includes a Thanksgiving break from Nov. 25-29, and a two-week winter break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, 2020.

Palmer said since New Year’s Day falls on a Wednesday, “we decided it would be good to have those two (following) days off as well.”

The calendar has six “Outside School Environment” days, also known as OS days. Those days are March 23, March 30, April 6, April 20, April 27 and May 4, all in 2020.

“What are those? Snow days,” Palmer said. “If we use all those days, it would be the decision of the board whether we would add on days (to the end of the school year). You’ll have several options.”

The last day of school, barring snow days, will be June 3, 2020, a Wednesday. The employment term ends the following day.

The calendar provides state-required 180 days of instruction and 20 “other days,” such as breaks and holidays, for a 200-day school year.

Palmer said he will present the calendar for approval at the board’s Feb. 12 meeting. The calendar will remain on public comment through that meeting, officials said.
