PARKERSBURG –Candlelight Compline services begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at First Lutheran Church, located at 1701 19th St.

The services celebrating the Advent Season at First Lutheran are conducted Thursdays prior to Christmas on Dec. 13 and Dec. 20.

This year a “minimal meal” of soup and bread will be served at 6 p.m. preceding the services.

The Rev. Ian B. Reid, senior pastor of First Lutheran, instituted the Compline services a number of years ago and have become anticipated each Advent Season, he said. The evening services were originally designed as the last prayer service of the day and date back to the Benedictine era (c. 480-550 AD).

To this day, Compline services last approximately 30 minutes and preserve the ancient traditions of simplicity, restfulness and timelessness of text and song.

The homilies for this season’s Compline services will focus on God with us, as our Potter, our Shepherd, our Living Branch and our Guide.

Compline services are open to the public and invited to share in these opportunities for quiet meditation in the candlelit setting of the sanctuary at First Lutheran Church.

First Lutheran is handicap-accessible and there is free parking adjacent to the church. For more information, call the church at 304-428-6174.
