Wood County Schools has short schedule this week

Parent-teacher conferences, training to be held this week

PARKERSBURG — Wood County Schools will begin today with a two-hour delay and there will no classes the remainder of the week for parent-teacher conferences and teacher training sessions.

Schools will open this morning two hours later than usual, allowing time for faculty senates to meet at each of the district’s 27 public schools, said Curriculum Director Christie Willis. Districts are required by state law to provide six faculty senate days each year.

On Thursday, schools will hold parent-teacher conferences from noon to 8 p.m. Superintendent Will Hosaflook said the modified schedule for teachers allows parents and guardians more opportunities to schedule the meetings.

“We’re one of the only counties that does this,” he said. “It’s to make things easier on the parents.”

Willis said Friday is a continuing education day for teachers. Though students won’t be in class, every school will have meetings and training sessions throughout the day.

“It’ll be different for each school,” Willis said. “The principals are able to see and address the unique needs at their buildings.”

Areas of discussion will range from attendance to behavior to math and reading intervention strategies, she said.

“This is just to name a few,” Willis said. “It’s vast and widespread and everyone’s agenda looks different.”

Hosaflook meets monthly with Wood County Schools principals, and part of those meetings involves book studies to identify and implement new strategies to improve learning and school culture.

“A lot of the principals are now taking those discussions back to their schools and to their teachers,” he said.
