Final reading set for Parkersburg police raises

Parkersburg City Council meets Tuesday

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg City Council Tuesday will hear the final reading of an ordinance to increase the compensation of police officers.

The increase of $2.53 an hour would apply to grades CS-2, CS-5, CS-8 and CS-9 for patrolmen, sergeants, lieutenant and captain. The police chief, an appointed position, is not included.

In a separate action to attract qualified police officers, council in September approved a $10,000 hiring bonus to encourage certified officers to join the force. New hires must remain with the department for a year before receiving the bonus.

Council will meet in regular session 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers.

Also on the agenda:

* A resolution authorizing the mayor to submit the tax increment financing report on the Avery Court Redevelopment District 3 to the West Virginia Development Office. A public hearing will be held.

* A resolution authorizing the mayor to accept a Fairs and Festivals Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History of $2,790 for fiscal 2019.

The funds are intended for the Taste of Parkersburg, which is organized and administered by Main Street Parkersburg.

The revisions put money into the fireworks on July 4, road salt, purchase of land for a multi-use trail, sidewalks, vehicles, mowing and grant writing, rehabilitation and new construction of drainage systems, police compensation, parks, information technology, pensions and 2019 street projects, among other uses.

* An ordinance on final reading authorizing the mayor to sign a contract for a loan guarantee assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build the new fire station at 16th and Covert streets. The guarantee would be used as a collateral for a $1.5 million loan.
