Murder case among Wood County indictments

PARKERSBURG — A man accused of killing his father and concealing his body for days was one of more than 100 people indicted Friday by the Wood County Grand Jury.

Also indicted were a mother who allegedly sprayed bleach in her 16-month-old son’s face, and a man who fatally shot a woman in his trailer.

James Thomas Hendershot, 35, currently in custody at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County, was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a deceased human body, according to a release from the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hendershot was arrested in January at the 3624 Liberty St., Parkersburg, the home he shared with his father, the late James C. Hendershot, 65.

Police were contacted after a relative went to the house to check on the father, who had reportedly not answered his phone in several days. When that individual asked the son if he’d seen his father recently, James Thomas Hendershot said he was in his room, according to court documents.

The witness tried to enter the home and had to push his way inside, but he was unable to open the bedroom door. That’s where first-responders found the elder Hendershot’s body after other family members called 911.

Investigators said in January they believed the son struck his father at some point in the week prior and the older man made his way to the bedroom and later died. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.

Also in custody at the NCRJ, Sylvia Lynn Eden, 27, was indicted on charges of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury, child abuse creating the risk of serious bodily injury or death and child neglect creating the risk of serious bodily injury or death.

Eden was arrested in July after an investigation by Parkersburg Police that began when a detective was notified by staff from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus of suspicious injuries to Eden’s 16-month-old son. The boy reportedly had chemical burns on his face, back and shoulder that were not consistent with accidental trauma.

After first blaming the boy’s 4-year-old sibling, Eden told police she had sprayed her son in the face with bleach because he was crying, then left him in his crib for 20 minutes before checking on him.

Michael Levi Gainer, 19, of 1204 28th St., Vienna, was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter and wanton endangerment involving a firearm.

In March, according to a criminal complaint, Gainer was handling what he knew to be a loaded firearm and had been drinking alcohol. The firearm discharged, striking 27-year-old Eva Munoz, of Parkersburg, in the chest, investigators said. She was declared dead at Camden Clark Medical Center
