Highway Patrol: Man injured fleeing from troopers

GALLIPOLIS — A Pomeroy man was injured Tuesday in a car crash while being pursued by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the patrol said.

Joseph Todd Billingsley, 38, wrecked his 2002 Chevrolet Tracker on U.S. Route 35 near milepost 15, the patrol said.

Billingsley was taken by medical helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington; his injuries were listed as non-incapacitating, the patrol said.

The patrol said the pursuit began about 2 p.m. when troopers attempted to stop Billingsley’s vehicle for an exhaust violation as he drove west on Route 35.

During the chase, Billingsley made several marked lane violations, the patrol said, and a pursuit was initiated when Billingsley failed to stop for troopers who had activated lights and sirens.

Billingsley then lost control of the vehicle, which slid into the median and overturned, the patrol said.

Billingsley, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, the patrol said. The Highway Patrol has not said what charges, if any, Billingsley could be facing.

The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, Rio Grande Police Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Gallipolis Fire Department and Gallia County EMS assisted in the investigation.
