Police seeking help identifying decomposed body

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg Police are seeking information on the identity of a decomposed body found Monday evening at St. Joseph Landing in the 1800 block of Murdoch Avenue.

The unrecognizable body of a male, approximate age unknown, was found by the St. Joseph Landing property manager around 5 p.m. in an area covered with trees and bushes on the south side of the parking garage at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital, said Police Chief Joe Martin.

The deceased person could have been in the area where he was found for several days or weeks, Martin said. A tent was in the vicinity of the body. There was no identification on the body.

The case is being treated as a homicide investigation until details prove otherwise, Martin said.

Homeless people stay in that area during the warmer weather, Martin said. The police department is contacting homeless shelters and food pantries in an attempt to determine if someone has not been seen at these locations for several days.

The body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Anyone with information can contact the police department at 424-8444 or go to pkbpolice.com to leave an anonymous crime tip.
