Firefighters crash arriving at New Matamoras fire; home a total loss

NEW MATAMORAS — Two firefighters were transported to the hospital following a response to a mobile home fire in New Matamoras Friday afternoon.

The fire broke out at 233 North Fork Road, New Matamoras, according to Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks.

“New Matamoras, Newport, Antioch and Sardis fire departments all responded but on the way to the fire a couple of firemen responding were involved in a two-vehicle collision in front of the library in New Matamoras,” reported Mincks. “I was told they were transported to the hospital and that the mobile home is a complete loss. But the house structure connected to it, while the fire did spread, is not a loss.”

Mincks said fire crews remained on the scene to monitor hot spots into Friday night. He did not have the names of the men involved in the crash.

He said a full report would be the responsibility of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in coming days.

A dispatcher with the patrol said Friday evening they were unaware of the incident.
