VIENNA — A Vienna home sustained extensive damage following a fire Monday.

The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 824 37th St. at around 11:40 a.m., said Vienna Fire Chief Steve Scholl.

”There was heavy smoke venting out from the roof,” Scholl said.

In addition to the Vienna VFD, the Williamstown VFD was called out on mutual aid.

”We had 20 firefighters and four engines on the scene,” Scholl said.

St. Joseph’s Ambulance and the Vienna Police Department also responded to the scene.

Rylee Cottrell said an explosion in the fireplace of her stepfather’s home caused the glass front to shatter.

Her mother called her to come over and while they were cleaning up the glass they noticed the smoke; they quickly gathered important things and left the house and called 911.

She stayed nearby the home and was sitting on a four-wheeler watching firefighters work on extinguishing the fire through the garage of the home.

Firefighters conducted an interior attack on the blaze through the front door and through the garage, the chief said. Crews had the fire under control within a half-hour of arriving on the scene and had it completely out within a couple of hours.

The fire originated in a chimney in a family room area behind the kitchen, officials said.

Scholl said the house had been added on a couple of times where the layout of the home provided a challenge for crews in fighting the fire. There were reports from the scene of the fire getting in-between floors.

Scholl said the fire got up into the attic and the rafters, causing structural damage to the house. There was also extensive smoke damage throughout the house.

This is the second fire crews responded to in Vienna over a 24-hour period.

At 10 p.m. Sunday, the Vienna VFD and the Williamstown VFD responded to a fire at 640 Summit Road.

That fire was contained to a front room, Scholl said.

There were 26 firefighters on the scene. St. Joseph’s Ambulance, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and the Vienna Police Department also responded.

Damage was limited to the room and its contents. There was smoke damage throughout the house.

Scholl did not have a dollar amount in damage for either of the fires.

Loss was limited to the homes.

”There were no injuries in either fire, civilian or firefighter,” the chief said.
