Person identified, search for second victim suspended

The scene today on Laurel Creek Road where the body of a woman was found in a vehicle submerged in high water from Laurel Creek. The search is on for a second person who may have been in the vehicle, Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens said.

PARKERSBURG – Authorities have identified the woman found dead in a submerged SUV in Laurel Creek while a search for a second person feared dead has been suspended.

The deceased is Topanga I. Smith, 18, of 172 Andy Acres Lane, Waverly, Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens said.

She was found early this afternoon when the 1999 Jeep Cherokee she was in was pulled from the creek off Laurel Creek Road, he said.

A search for a second person, a man believed to have been driving, was suspended because of the weather, Stephens said.
