Fire prompts evacuation of Vienna residence

VIENNA — A furnace fire Tuesday prompted the evacuation of a Vienna home.

Residents at 905 27th St. called the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Tuesday afternoon after the residence began to fill with smoke. Fire Chief Steve Scholl said a servicemsan was working on a basement furnace when it caught fire.

Two adults and two children were evacuated. One resident was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation, Scholl said.

There was no structural damage, though there was some smoke damage in the residence, Scholl said.

Utilities were shut off to the home and the residents were instructed to not return until the residence had been cleaned and the furnace replaced. The local American Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing.

Vienna received aid from the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department and about 15 firefighters responded. The fire was considered accidental.
