Police arrest fleeing motorist

PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Police Department arrested a Clarksburg man Tuesday afternoon after he fled following an accident involving a police vehicle, police said.

Kevin Lee Thompson, 38, of Clarksburg, was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of fleeing with reckless indifference and arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court, where he was remanded to the North Central Regional Jail after failing to post $5,000 bond, Police Chief Joe Martin said.

The situation began about 12:25 p.m. Tuesday when a vehicle backed out of a private parking lot in the 1600 block of Seventh Street and collided with a Parkersburg Police Department vehicle and then fled from the officer and the scene where the crash occurred, Martin said.

The uniformed officer activated emergency lights and siren and stopped the vehicle in the 1700 block of Seventh Street. The officer asked for identification and proper vehicle information. The male driver, identified as Thompson, refused to comply with the officer’s command and fled from the traffic stop, traveling west on Seventh Street, Martin said.

The officer pursued the vehicle until the driver entered U.S. 50 traveling the wrong way. The driver attempted to elude the officers by driving west in the eastbound lanes as they traveled in the eastbound lanes paralleling the fleeing driver, Martin said.

The driver nearly struck several vehicles head-on, according to a criminal complaint filed in magistrate court.

The pursuit ended when the driver of the fleeing vehicle crashed near the Staunton Avenue exit of U.S. 50, Martin said. The driver exited his vehicle and attempted to flee from the officers on foot.

He was apprehended quickly after officers were able to force the male to the ground. The driver was non-compliant with officers’ commands until a Taser was used and at that time he became compliant and placed under arrest, Martin said.

Thompson was taken to Camden Clark Medical Center for medical clearance for incarceration. Martin said the officers involved in the crash and pursuit were not injured. The Wood County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the arrest of Thompson.
