Turkey Trot set for Nov. 23

PARKERSBURG — Prior to sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, hundreds of people will run or walk through City Park during the 39th annual Turkey Trot in Parkersburg.

The race starts at 9 a.m. Nov. 23 and follows the same course as previous years. The registration fee is $13 in advance and goes to $15 on Friday. There is a discount for four or more signing up together until Friday.

The first 3,000 registered will receive a long sleeve Turkey Trot T-shirt.

Sharon Marks is serving as Turkey Trot director for the first time this year.

“I am very nervous but Joe Corra, the previous director, has been very helpful and did such a great job that he made it easy to take over,” Marks said. “I am the director of the Parkersburg 2 Mile (17 years) so I have a little experience. The Turkey Trot is the largest money making project River City Runners and Walkers Club has. The race supports the many projects RCRW club is involved with throughout the year.”

The T-shirt pick up and registration will be Nov. 22 at the City Park Pavilion from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Registrations will also be taken until 8:45 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

A new addition to this year’s event will be door prizes, Marks said. The first male and female runner will receive a fresh turkey and a special gift.

Organizers will be drawing for approximately 60 door prizes. The names will be listed on a board at the finish line.

“Take your name to the pavilion and collect your unique door prize. My hope is that everyone who is chosen as a winner will receive the prize. In the past so many people leave before we draw for the door prizes and they miss out,” Marks said.

Another new addition to this eyar’s event is a major sponsor, Marks said.

“The Shirt Factory and Sporting Goods have been very supportive and helpful in this year’s event,” she said.

Other sponsors and supporters include On the Run and Walk, Couch Rental and Camden Clark Medical Center.

Marks said about 3,300 people participated in last year’s Trot and she hopes to beat that number this year. Applications can be found at On the Run, the YMCA of Parkersburg and online at the rivercityrunnersandwalkers.com website and the Parkersburg Turkey Trot Facebook page.
