St. Marys defeats East Hardy, 27-21

BAKER — St. Marys is going back to Wheeling to defend its Class A state football championship next weekend.

The Bue Devils ended the state’s longest home winning streak with a 27-21 semifinal-round victory over top-seeded East Hardy with a 27-21 win Friday night.

Jaiden Smith paced SM with 154 yards and three TDs on 24 carries.

The first half was slow in scoring as the two teams combined for just 20 points by halftime.

EH went on top with a 13-7 lead, but SM’s Smith tallied on a five-yard run with 7:04 to go in the third quarter to edge ahead 14-13.

EH then got the lead back as QB Clay Skovron went 11 yards to paydirt at 2:35 of the third

But the rest of the way belonged to SM as Smith toted the pigskin 12 yards into the end zone at the 10:21 mark of the fourth quarter.

The winning tally came from the workhorse Smith again with just 1:25 to play in regulation when he scampered 17 yards to get his team on top to stay at 27-21.

EH had several chances in the game’s closing minutes, but finally got to the end of its rope when a 4th-and-10 pass fell incomplete at the EH 49.
