Tallman elected president of family court judge association

PARKERSBURG — Wood County Family Court Judge Darren Tallman has recently been elected as president of the West Virginia Association of Family Court Judges.

The FCJ association is made up of the 47 Family Court Judges serving the 55 counties in the state and retired Family Court Judges.

Tallman will serve a 1-year term as president of the association.

Tallman was first elected in 2002 as Family Court Judge for the Third Family Court Circuit, which covers Wood and Pleasants counties. Tallman also serves as the presiding Judge over the Wood County Juvenile Drug Court since its beginning in 2010.

Wood County Juvenile Drug Court has also accepted juveniles from Wirt, Pleasants and Ritchie counties.

Tallman said he believes there are many challenges facing Family Court Judges. The current substance abuse crisis has made already difficult cases even more challenging, he said.

Family Court Judges have few resources that are readily available to deal with families that are often in crisis, Tallman said.

The challenge for the next year will be to work with other state officials in all branches of government to make sure Family Court Judges have all the tools they need to make informed decisions about children and families, he said.
