Parkersburg Police: Reported shooting a suicide

PARKERSBURG — A Parkersburg man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday afternoon at a residence in south Parkersburg.

Units of the Parkersburg Police Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Parkersburg Fire Department and St. Joseph’s Ambulance Service converged on the 2100 block of Nora Street to a report of a person with a gun and shots fired about 4 p.m. Friday.

Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said the identity of the individual was known but was not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The incident began when the man, who was serving time on home confinement, apparently cut off his monitoring unit. When a Wood County Home Confinement officer arrived to check on his status, the man reportedly obtained a weapon, barricaded himself in a garage and fired one shot, taking his own life, Martin said.
