Entrants, sponsors needed for chili cookoff

PARKERSBURG — Chili chefs and enthusiasts will have a chance to share their spicy interest during the seventh annual Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cookoff on Oct. 14 at Point Park Marketplace in downtown Parkersburg.

Entrants and sponsors are being sought for the event, which will run from 2-5 p.m. in the marketplace’s parking lot at 113 Ann St., said organizer Marvin Edwards, with the marketplace.

Information and registration forms for teams and individual cooks and for sponsors are available online at www.pointparkmarketplace.com along with a list of team rules and regulations. There will be cash prizes for the top winners, Edwards said.

The competition fee is $25 per team if they supply their own tents or $75 if the venue is asked to provide a tent (deadline is Sept. 23). The deadline for cookoff entries is Sept. 29.

The deadline for sponsorships is Sept. 22. Sponsorship levels range from $250 to $2,500.

Admission for chili lovers is $12 in advance online or at the marketplace from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets will be $15 at the door on Oct. 14.

Founded and organized by the Chamber of Commerce of the Mid-Ohio Valley for the first several years, Edwards said this year’s event is being organized by the marketplace, which has been the cookoff’s home for the last two years after starting at Point Park.

Edwards said chamber officials asked if Point Park Marketplace would be interested in handling this year’s event and they accepted.

“I was really interested because it’s such a fun activity,” he said.

Most of the rules are the same, so previous chili contestants should be familiar with the format and competition, Edwards said.
