Wood County Board of Education to discuss contracts, construction

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Board of Education meets 6:30 p.m. today to discuss the superintendent’s contract and receive an update on construction projects.

The board meets at the district’s 13th and Plum streets offices in Parkersburg. The meeting is open to the public.

Only three items are included on the agenda. The first is a discussion of developing the 2017-18 goals, evaluation and contract for Superintendent John Flint. The board has met in executive session multiple times in the past few months to discuss Flint’s evaluation and contract. Flint is in the second year of a three-year contract with a $120,000 annual salary.

Last year, the school board attempted to modify Flint’s contract to extend it by one year and give him a 5 percent pay increase, but Flint later asked for the vote to be recinded as state law does not allow a current contract to be changed. The contract as-is does not include an annual pay increase.

The board also will discuss supplemental and extra-duty pay for employees. The discussion will be led by Finance Director Whitni Kines.

Assistant Superintendent Mike Fling, who oversees facilities for Wood County Schools, will give the board an update on construction projects throughout the district, including progress on various projects being done as part of the district’s $41 million bond call.

The district already has begun work on roof replacements and is purchasing property for a new Williamstown Elementary School and the expansion of Williamstown High School.
