Police: Parkersburg woman tries to disarm officer, makes weapon discharge

Jordan Lea Bartram

PARKERSBURG — A Parkersburg woman was arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to disarm an arresting officer.

Jordan Lea Bartram, 22, of 500 13th St., Apt. 307, was arrested on warrants and several charges that occurred at the time of her arrest.

Police Chief Joe Martin said the Parkersburg Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Seventh Street Saturday in reference to a female who requested assistance. Upon arrival, officers spoke to Bartram. Officers made a warrant inquiry and discovered that she was wanted in Ohio for an outstanding warrant for battery of a police officer, Martin said.

Officers took her into custody after a short foot pursuit. Martin said Bartram continued to be combative and aggressive towards the officers.

She was handcuffed and restrained in a marked cruiser. Once at the PPD, Bartram allegedly continued to be belligerent and refused normal booking procedures and was taken directly to the Wood County Holding Center. Holding Center officials requested that the prisoner be taken to Camden Clark Medical Center to be medically cleared for incarceration.

Martin said officers transported Bartram to CCMC to be evaluated for incarceration. She was cleared by the staff at CCMC and officers attempted to take her to jail. During this attempt, Bartram refused to walk or to be escorted from the emergency department to a marked cruiser.

Additional officers were called to the ER to assist in carrying her to a marked cruiser. Officers carried Bartram out of the exam room towards the police vehicle at which time she was able to grab the grip of an officer’s pistol in an attempt to remove the pistol, Martin said. Bartram was unable to remove the pistol but she was able to pull the trigger of the firearm while it remained in the holster, causing the pistol to fire one round through the bottom of the holster.

The bullet impacted the floor and some of the fragments struck two of the officers at the scene causing minor injuries, Martin said. Bartram was handcuffed behind her back at the time of this incident. She never removed the officer’s firearm from the secured holster, he said.

Bartram continued to be violent and belligerent towards the officers and the staff of the hospital. She stated that she intended to harm the officers on scene. She was then taken to Wood County Holding Center to await her arraignment, Martin said.

In addition to the warrants from Ohio, Bartram was charged with three counts of second-offense battery of a police officer, two counts of wanton endangerment and attempting to disarm a police officer, all of which are felony counts from the incident at the emergency department at CCMC.

She was arraigned at Wood County Magistrate Court in front of Magistrate Jody Purkey who set her bond at $75,000 on Saturday. She remained in custody at the North Central Regional Jail.
