BELPRE — The Belpre Board of Education finished out the 2017 fiscal year Wednesday and approved a FY2018 budget for Belpre City Schools.

The $12.7 million FY2018 budget is about $700,000 less than the FY2017 budget, reflecting an end-of-year revenue adjustment.

Belpre City Schools Treasurer Lance Erlwein said Wednesday’s vote closes out the current fiscal year, and allows the district to open the new fiscal year July 1.

“We can’t spend a dollar until the board approves the appropriations,” he said, “so this (vote) must happen before we open up fiscal year 2018.”

The board Wednesday also held an executive session to discuss personnel matters and in open session approved several new hires and assignments for the coming school year.

Among those approved was Elizabeth Braun, the new assistant principal at Belpre Elementary School. Braun was hired on a two-year contract, effective Aug. 1.

Superintendent Tony Dunn also presented parent-student handbooks for Belpre High School, Belpre Athletics and Belpre Elementary for the 2017-18 school year. The high school and athletic handbooks will be reviewed and approved in July. The elementary school handbook was approved Wednesday.
