Doddridge County teen dies in accident

WEST UNION — A 17-year-old Doddridge County boy died Wednesday after his car collided with a dump truck on a wet road.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. on West Virginia 18, about two miles north of West Union, Doddridge County Sheriff Michael Headley said. The youth was driving south in a 2000 Ford Focus SE, while a dump truck loaded with stone was headed north.

“The juvenile came into the turn … and hydroplaned and slid into the path of the oncoming truck, resulting in a fatality,” Headley said.

The sheriff declined to release the name of the deceased, citing his age.

Headley said he was not sure of the speed at which the boy’s vehicle was traveling, but investigators planned to do a crash reconstruction on Thursday.

The driver of the dump truck, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, the sheriff said. The truck is owned by Wolfe Excavating.

The accident remains under investigation, although Headley said the truck driver was not at fault.

“It was absolutely no fault of his whatsoever,” the sheriff said.
