Wood County Sheriff Ken Merritt reported in third crash
VIENNA — Reports of another crash involving Wood County Sheriff Ken Merritt have been confirmed.
Vienna Chief of Police George Young said the department was notified of a vehicle hitting an unattended vehicle on private property around noon Thursday in the parking lot of the Kmart at 800 Grand Central Ave.
Young said the call came from the driver of the struck vehicle.
Reports of Merritt leaving the scene are under investigation, Young said Thursday night.
Young said Merritt was driving a county-owned vehicle at the time of the accident. He said the damage to the other vehicle appeared to be less than $500.
“Basically, the front bumper of his vehicle hit the rear bumper of the other car,” Young said. “We are still investigating reports he left the scene early.”
Thursday’s incident is the third reported crash in which Merritt was involved. In July it was reported he was involved in a three-car crash at the intersection of Eighth and Green streets in Parkersburg. In September it was reported he was involved in an accident on private property.
In November, Merritt lost his bid for a fourth term as sheriff. His term ends Dec. 31.
