Roane County sheriff-elect resigns from Spencer Police Department

Suspended during investigation into missing evidence

SPENCER — A Spencer police officer and Roane County sheriff-elect has resigned from the Spencer Police Department following his suspension and an ongoing investigation.

The Spencer Mayor’s Office confirmed Matthew “Bo” Williams resigned Monday from the police department. Williams was placed on administrative leave in November during an investigation of missing evidence. No details on the investigation or what went missing have been made public. The West Virginia State Police are investigating.

Williams was elected as sheriff in Roane County in November and is scheduled to take office after the beginning of the year.

Roane County Commission President Melissa O’Brien said the commission is unable to take action before Williams takes office.

“At our last meeting (Tuesday), we had an update from the prosecuting attorney, but according to code we cannot do anything until the sheriff-elect is in office,” O’Brien said. “Technically he doesn’t take office until Jan. 1.”

O’Brien said after Williams takes office, the commission will meet again to discuss the investigation and what actions the commission may take.

“Until then, there’s really nothing we can do but wait,” she said.

Spencer Police Chief Greg Nichols was out of the office Thursday and unable to comment.

Spencer Mayor Terry Williams has declined to comment on the investigation. Terry Williams is the great-uncle of Bo Williams.
