Parkersburg SleepOut set for Nov. 5

VIENNA — The third annual Parkersburg SleepOut will be held on Nov. 5 and go all night into early Nov. 6 at the Jackson Memorial Park Ballfields.

The Parkersburg SleepOut is designed to bring awareness and to raise funds for the homeless youth of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

In 2015, about 150 participants and volunteers attended the SleepOut, which has a fundraising competition among individuals and teams.

People can attend the event as part of a team or as an individual. Each person or team can choose to sleep out in a tent, in a cardboard shelter they design, or come to the event for activities and entertainment.

A minor consent form is required for everyone who is 18 or younger. That form can be found at parkersburgsleepout2016.kintera.org or by contacting the Children’s Home Society in Parkersburg.

Participants and volunteers will be provided with a late supper, an early breakfast and hot drinks throughout the evening.

Teams will nominate a team captain to register the team; the team captain will be the point of contact. Team captains must complete entry forms for any contests the team participates in.

There is a $25 entry fee for those participating in the box design contest, and a general donation for those only coming for the entertainment or participating in other ways. With the $25 entry fee, those who attend are giving an event T-shirt and a raffle/door prize ticket. additional tickets can be purchased.

There is one grand prize for the top individual fundraiser.

Donors can contribute to individuals, teams or a general SleepOut fund online at parkersburgsleepout2016.kintera.com or by cash or check at the Children’s Home Society Offices on St. Marys Avenue or at the event.

There will be a Boxed-In Design contest for each team; if the team competes it  will be constructing a shelter out of cardboard; the theme for the Boxed-In Design contest will be regarding homelessness.

This year’s theme is Friends Helping Friends, which is the National Runaway Safeline Theme.

Judges will be judging each shelter on creativity of the design, warmth, comfort and livability.

Trophies for first, second and third place will be awarded in two categories: the best design and best theme. Trophies for best theme will go to the design that best represents youth homelessness, promoting homeless awareness, the issues, available resources, a call to action, etc.

The activities will start with a DJ playing various styles of music from 4-8 p.m. and then also from 9:30-11:30 p.m. The opening ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. Field games will be 5 p.m.-11 p.m.

A warming tent will be available and open all night, with board games and video games available. They will also be showing the movie “August Rush.”
