Williamstown suffers rash of vehicle entries

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williamstown Police Department has received 26 reports of vehicles being entered without breaking throughout the night between Monday and Thursday morning, said Williamstown Police Chief Shawn Graham.

The incidents occurred on several streets, in driveways and on the roadway, with unlocked vehicles, Graham said Thursday. Some of the vehicles that were entered were in the city and others near Williamstown, he said.

One vehicle had $270 from a kids sports raffle stolen, Graham said. Binoculars, lose change, medical pills and a loaded handgun were stolen from other vehicles, he said.

The .40-caliber Springfield handgun was stolen from a truck on 4 1/2 Street between Sunday night and Monday morning, Graham said.

The Williamstown Police Department has posted on its Facebook page about the vehicles being entered in and outside of Williamstown and that the incidents were all from unlocked vehicles, said Graham.

Graham recommends  everyone lock their vehicles and residences every night.

“We also ask that if you witness any suspicious persons or activity, please call 911,” said Graham.

Graham said the Williamstown Police Department monitors its Facebook page on a daily basis, but does not monitor it hourly.

Graham said a few of the victims Thursday admitted they saw the warning posted  by the department Monday but didn’t take it seriously.

There has been zero forced entries of the vehicles, said Graham.
