Man arrested in missing teen’s death

POMEROY – A body found over the weekend by Meigs County authorities has been identified as a missing West Virginia teen.

On Monday, Meigs County Sheriff Keith O. Wood reported a body discovered Saturday on the banks of the Ohio River near Portland, Ohio, had been identified as 16-year-old Erika Brown who was reported missing Aug. 10 from Kanawha County, W.Va.

Wood said Ernest M. Roach, 36, of Racine, Ohio, was taken into custody on federal charges out of Kanawha County in connection with Brown’s disappearance after being stopped by a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

While Roach was in the custody, the remains of Brown were discovered by a group of individuals camping on the Ohio River in Meigs County.

Meigs County Prosecutor Collen Williams said Roach will be charged with murder today. Roach is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal Service in South Central Regional Jail in West Virginia.

Wood said the investigation has been a joint effort between the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshal Service.

The investigation is currently ongoing and further details will be released as they become available, Wood said.
