Wood County sheriff names Smith chief deputy
PARKERSBURG – Wood County Sheriff’s Capt. M.F. Smith has been named the department’s next chief deputy.
Sheriff Ken Merritt announced this morning that Smith, a 25-year veteran of the department, would be sworn in as chief deputy on Aug. 1, replacing Shawn Graham, who is leaving at the end of the month to become the chief of the Williamstown Police Department.
“It was a bit of a surprise, but I did appreciate the opportunity to take over the chief’s position,” Smith said.
Williamstown City Council has a meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. today, at which it’s Graham’s hiring is expected to be made official.
