Recovery group meets on Thursdays

VIENNA – A group is reaching out to adults, teens and young children who are facing problems in their lives.

Celebrate Recovery Mid-Ohio Valley, a Bible-based program, has been meeting once a week for more than a year at River Valley Community Church, 1412 27th St. in Vienna, to help people experiencing struggles with depression, addiction, gambling, lust, anger, shame, fear, obsession, co-dependency, greed, divorce, overwork, deceit, envy, hate and abuse.

The meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at the church. Reservations are not required and a meal follows the sessions.

The program is free and open to everyone, regardless of church affiliation.

Jennifer Watson, ministry leader, said there is a huge need for this type of ministry in the Mid-Ohio Valley. People have been traveling from throughout the region to attend, Watson said. About 60 people, male and female, have been attending the meetings.

“We would like to get more people out to the meetings,” Watson said. “People can profit from it. We have had a lot of good results since September 2012.”

Celebrate Recovery is an anonymous recovery meeting. “All meetings are open to everyone who desires change, but anonymity and confidentiality are basic requirements of attendance,” according to the group’s website.

The group uses the eight recovery principles based on Bible messages. Meetings contain music and singing, prayer and a reading of the steps or recovery principles.

There is a time of teaching or someone may share testimony, or a story. Then, the participants break up into gender specific support groups where everyone may share their experience. There are separate groups for teens and younger children.

At the end there is a free meal and a time for fellowship.
