Tyler students to perform at Arts Alive

MIDDLEBOURNE – The After-School Choir and Percussion Ensemble at Arthur I. Boreman Elementary in Tyler County will perform at Arts Alive on Friday at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston.

Arts Alive begins 7 p.m. and the Boreman Elementary ensemble will be the first group to perform. Students, on barred instruments, will perform “Clave,” “Crunchy, Crunchy, Crunchy” and “Hidden Treasure” composed by Walt Hampton.

Admission for the performance is free and open to the public.

The After-School Choir and Percussion Ensemble at Boreman Elementary is comprised of 23 fourth- and fifth-grade students. Fourth graders are Haygen Baker, Jude Childers, Bryar Glasscock, Weston Henderson, Case Landis, Kara Lynch, Jordyn Potoczny, Ezra Reed, Romana Rice, Caleb Strode, Briann Templeton and Lauren Templeton. Fifth graders are Imagen Anderson, A.J. Benzing, Abigail Ebert, Savannah Ferrell, Seth Moore, Gracie Shepherd, Regan Smith, Michael Suter, Eden Turner, Kelsi Vandruff, and Logan Wade. They are under the direction of Matt Jennings.

The invitation to perform was made by Christine N. Camper Moore, Ph.D., arts coordinator at the West Virginia Department of Education.

Moore made the invitation after she watched its performance at the Solo and Ensemble Honors Recital during the West Virginia Music Educators Association’s state conference on March 20 in Wheeling. She also has contacted several other honor ensembles from the state music conference to perform at Arts Alive.

This group of students became state honors finalists for Solo and Ensemble for the second year in a row. It is the only elementary ensemble in West Virginia to ever achieve this distinction.

The annual Arts Alive showcases outstanding arts education programs and student achievements in public schools. Performances are selected from state arts conferences, festivals, and exhibits throughout West Virginia, a competitive submission process and by invitation.

Arts Alive is in its eighth year and has expanded collaborations and interdisciplinary partnerships to include work in dance, music, pre-kindergarten, science in the arts, theater and visual arts. Students perform and exhibit work before an audience of students, family members, educators, policy makers, leaders, advocates and philanthropists.
