Enoch re-appointed to committee

PARKERSBURG – Bob Enoch, with the Wood County Historical and Preservation Society, has been named to a second three-year term on the Citizens Program Committee of the West Virginia Humanities Council.

“We review grant proposals that are submitted and discuss them, there have been many projects all over the state funded through the grants. The program is funded through the state and federal governments, and the funds are disbursed through the grants,” Enoch said.

Enoch said he would like to see more grant proposals coming from Wood County. He has to abstain from discussions on those applications, but he noted there haven’t been many applications from the area to be considered.

“The funds, like others, have also been cut,” Enoch said.

One of the projects funded locally through the council was an archaeological dig at the site of the former Stiles Mansion, in Volcano, Mountwood Park.

“The historical society held a grant writing workshop last year with the grant coordinator from the council. She came here to make the presentation, we are trying to spur more people from here to apply. I think many people are just intimated by the process,” Enoch said.

Enoch said he enjoys the opportunity the council appointment provides to network and meet people from around West Virginia.

The council is the affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and serves West Virginia through grants and direct programs in the humanities.

The council budgets more than $530,000 for grants and programs annually and the 22-member program committee recommends funding decisions to its board of directors.

Members are: Enoch; A. Waller Hastings of Ohio County; Myra Ziegler of Summers County and Eric Waggoner, who chairs the English Department at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

These program committee members will serve a term that ends June 1, 2017.
