Wood County farmers holding meeting tonight

PARKERSBURG – Anthony Flaccavento, speaker, organic farmer and small business owner, is speaking at 7 p.m. today at the Wood County Farmers’ Short Course in Parkersburg.

The meeting is in the Fort Boreman Room of the Judge Black Annex to the Wood County Courthouse, across from the Blennerhasset Hotel on Market Street.

The meetings are free and open to the public and are intended to provide progressive education on improving management or marketing strategies for small farmers, landowners and for educational opportunities for the community, according to a press release.

This is the seventh meeting in a series of 10 educational meetings sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service and the Wood County Beef Improvement.

“The Farmers’ Short Course is a great educational opportunity for local farmers, gardeners and anyone interested in food production here in the Mid-Ohio Valley,” said J.J. Barrett, WVU agriculture extension agent for Wood County. “WVU Extension Service strives to provide research-based information to local citizens. The Short Course is also a great way for farmers to network and exchange ideas.”

Meetings include a local foods dinner sponsored by local farmers.

Flaccavento farms near Abingdon, Va., in the heart of Central Appalachia. He has been working on community environmental and economic development in the region and around the nation for the past 28 years.

In 1995, he founded Appalachian Sustainable Development, which became a regional and national leader in sustainable economic development.
