Investigation into Vienna child’s death continues
MARIETTA – The Marietta Police Department is continuing its investigation into the death of a 3-year-old Vienna child at Marietta Memorial Hospital last week, Capt. Jeff Waite said on Monday.
On Saturday, detectives with the department attended the autopsy of the unnamed boy who died of unknown causes in the emergency room after his arrival there Thursday afternoon. The police department was notified of the death at 6:50 p.m., according to a press release.
“Detectives did attend the autopsy and we expect the final autopsy report to be ready in six to eight weeks,” Waite said on Monday. “Until then all we can do is wait and investigate his history.”
Waite said the department is not releasing the preliminary findings of the autopsy or the child’s identity because it might hamper the investigation.
“It is premature for me to speak about potential causes of death until the autopsy report is completed,” he said.
The police department is working with the Vienna Police Department and the Wood County prosecutor, Waite said.
Waite said the Marietta department has no information regarding the boy’s history or if he had been abused in the past.
“For the present time we are not releasing any information about him or his past until the investigation is completed,” Waite said.
The autopsy was performed by the Montgomery County (Ohio) coroner, which provides autopsy services for 27 counties throughout Ohio, including Washington, Athens and Meigs counties.
