Winter weather closes schools across region

PARKERSBURG – Bitter cold temperatures closed schools throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley again today.

According to the West Virginia Department of Education website, classes were canceled in Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wirt and Wood counties today. Marietta City Schools are closed.

Temperatures dropped to record levels in two northern West Virginia cities Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reported.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in both Morgantown and Wheeling fell to 9 degrees below zero.

Morgantown’s old record for Jan. 28 was 6 degrees below zero in 1977. The old record in Wheeling was 2 degrees in 2005.
