Organ donor wins prize at Kohl’s store
PARKERSBURG – Greta Mooney received a pleasant surprise while waiting to donate a kidney to a friend.
Mooney of Parkersburg was shopping for an outfit to wear to a fundraiser in her honor when she won a Kohl’s Dream Receipt. Her entire tab ($134.58) was picked up at the Kohl’s department store in Parkersburg.
Mooney is scheduled to donate a kidney to her friend John Wiley of Cleveland on Jan. 8 at the Cleveland Clinic. Wiley has been undergoing kidney dialysis for 1.5 years and wants to live a normal life again, Mooney said.
“John is a great person,” Mooney said. “This will change his life. I wanted to do something meaningful to help someone.”
Saturday’s fundraiser at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea, Ohio, near Cleveland, was to help Mooney with her bills while she is off from work for about two months after the kidney surgery.
Mooney is a dog groomer at Pet Supplies Plus in Vienna.
The serendipitous event occurred Dec. 1 when Mooney was preparing to purchase the clothes at Kohl’s for the Ohio event – a purchase she admitted she really could not afford.
“I wanted to look nice,” she said.
Mooney said it was exciting to be told at the cash register her outfit would be paid for by Kohl’s.
Kohl’s employees were thrilled to learn about Mooney’s story and why she was purchasing the outfit.
Mooney worked for Pet Supplies Plus in Cleveland before moving to this area in October 2012 to work at the Vienna store.
After some testing, Mooney was approved to be a kidney donor in September.
An account has been set up at Huntington Bank locations for anyone wanting to donate money to the “Greta Mooney Pay It Forward Benefit Fund” to help her pay bills while off from work.
