Point Park Marketplace to hold mixer

PARKERSBURG – The new Point Park Marketplace will hold a fundraising event this Friday to celebrate its new Ann Street location.

Mayor Bob Newell said the event will run from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the 113 Ann St. building. Tickets for the event are $15 a person for pre-order or $20 a person at the door.

“We are doing this event for two reasons,” Newell said. “This will eventually be under a nonprofit organization, and this is to raise money to help renovate and operate the market.

“Just as importantly, we are trying to do this for exposure, to get more people into the market, and this is why the tickets are very reasonably priced.”

The event will feature cheese and wine samples, art demonstrations and an auction, and live music by the Chris Craig Trio.

Beginning at 7 p.m., guests will be served heavy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Gene Evans, director of the Culinary Arts Academy at West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s downtown campus. All of the ingredients used are West Virginia grown and produced.

“This is through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and they have lined up all of the food and produce and wineries,” Newell said.

Though the marketplace is not fully completed, Newell said nearly the whole building will be available for Friday’s event with plenty of seating.

“They’ll really be able to get a glimpse of what the market has to offer,” he said.

Newell said the event is pattered after annual fundraising events at the Capitol Market in Charleston and officials are hoping to draw a variety of people to the market, including younger residents who may be looking for shopping and entertainment options in the area.

“We are encouraging a lot of young people to come and check out the market,” he said. “We are pretty excited about this event.”

Tickets can be purchased at the mayor’s office on the fifth floor of the downtown Municipal Building. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone with a credit card by calling Kim Gant at the mayor’s office at 304-424-8416 or by email at kgantgirl@parkersburg-wv.com. Pre-orders will be accepted through the middle of the week.
